The Laredo web portal is committed to meeting federal government standards for making web content and applications usable for persons with disabilities. As directed on September 8, 2000, a comprehensive eGovernment initiative was launched that requires every agency and department to adhere to technical standards for accessible Web design and compatibility. The Accessibility Guide enables us to utilize the best tools and design available to ensure that the content of the Laredo portal can be reached by the widest possible audience regardless of disability, limitations of computer equipment or use of alternate Internet access devices.

Some of the key requirements are as follows:

  • Text will be provided for graphic elements.
  • Web pages will be designed so that all information conveyed with color is also available without color.
  • Online electronic forms will allow people using assistive technology to access the information, field elements, and functions required to complete and submit the forms.

If you use assistive technology, such as a screen reader, eye tracking device, voice recognition software, etc., and have difficulty accessing information on Laredo portal, please provide the link (web address) of the material you tried to access, the problem you experienced, and your contact information. We can then coordinate with the proper department to provide the information you are trying to access. The Laredo web portal will continue to be updated as technology evolves and new tools and resources for accessibility are developed.

But the digital divide does not just affect people with disabilities. People without disabilities who have busy hands or eyes, poor lighting or noisy surroundings will find the Laredo web portal very user-friendly. People with slow modems, older browsers, or those using alternate internet access devices (e.g., cellular telephones, personal digital assistants, etc.) will also benefit from a highly accessible website.
