Ryan White Behavioral Health Services (Information)
There is a high prevalence of mental illness among the adult HIV population. Treating common mental disorders has direct benefits on the quality of life and well-being of adults living with HIV. Research on the relationship between mood and anxiety disorders and HIV infection has revealed that mental health disorders lead to poor antiretroviral adherence and may speed the HIV disease progression. Given the increased risk of common mental disorders in people living with HIV, it makes sense to put basic preventive services into place in HIV treatment services.
Psychiatric and mental health care services are available on site for individuals receiving HIV treatment services. Such services may include individual mental health counseling, psycho-education, HIV treatment adherence support and psychiatric evaluation and treatment. Treatment may focus on a variety of behavioral health conditions and concerns, including:
- Depression
- Anxiety and Panic Disorders
- Anger Issues
- Chemical dependency
- Self-esteem Issues
- Trauma and Grief
- Risk Behaviors
Individuals experiencing any of these symptoms can be referred to a Licensed Professional Counselor who will conduct assessment, determine the appropriate interventions and create a customized treatment plan. All treatment efforts will focus on improving the individual’s mental health, strengthen coping skills and increase adherence to ongoing medical care and treatment for HIV.
