The Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network

Laredo ADDM Site

The Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network is a program that is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) since 2000. The main objective of this program is to collaboratively work with ADDM funded sites to collect data that will help to better understand the number and characteristics of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities (DDs) within various communities throughout the United States.

The City of Laredo ADDM site is one of 5 new sites that have been added to the ADDM Network. This makes a total of 16 sites across the United States. Our team with the Laredo Public Health Department is excited to contribute to this effort by finding the prevalence of ASD and other developmental disabilities of 4, 8, and 16-year-old children in south Texas. The purpose is to:

  • Determine the prevalence of ASD and other DDs
  • Provide information on early ASD identification, including the age of diagnosis and evaluations, and the characteristics of children with ASD
  • Educate and outreach to increase the awareness and support of those in our community with ASD

With this information efforts can be made to develop policies and programs, enhance infrastructure for diagnosis and detection, treatment, and linking to services. The data from our local site can inform our providers, educators, policymakers, and citizens about services, rally up support and improve health equity for the children and their families with ASD in our community.
